An Appalachian Quilt of Stories
Rev. Charles Maynard is a United Methodist minister, storyteller, and author. A graduate of Emory & Henry College in Virginia and the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, he has served in the United Methodist Church for over 30 years. He is currently the Maryville District Superintendent in the Holston Conference. He has authored or co-authored 30 books, includ-ing 21 children’s books. Charles is known for telling traditional Appalachian Mountain tales, stories of American history and national parks, and person-al narratives of growing up in the mountains.
For his writing in The Blue Ridge—Ancient and Majestic, Charles received the Reed Environmental Writing Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center. Charles worked as the first executive director of Friends of Great Smoky Mountains Na-tional Park and as director of advancement at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, TN. Charles was honored as one of the One Hun-dred Most Influential People in the History of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 2016. Charles married his high school sweetheart, Janice, who is a well-known novelist. They have two daughters, Caroline M. Lamar and Anna M. Lee. Charles and Janice both enjoy writing, traveling, and being with their family—especially their five grandchil-dren. Charles’ roots are deep in northeast MS.

The Confirmation Retreat is designed to compliment the conﬁrmation program oﬀered through your local church for students in grades 6-8. This retreat is a wonderful opportunity for conﬁrmands throughout the Mississippi Conference to be in community and learn together what it means to be a Christian in the United Methodist tradition.
